Nathan and Valerie leave Santarém

Nathan Darity e sua esposa, Valerie Hess, voltaram para os Estados Unidos após um mês de atividades voluntárias em Santarém. Nathan está programado para coordenar um grupo de voluntários Amizade em Tanzânia, África do mês de fevereiro e Valerie retorna ao seu trabalho de enfermagem em Pittsburgh, Pensilvânia. Eles esperam estar de volta a Santarém por alguns dias em março para ajudar a coordenar o Simpósio HEH, que terá lugar no IESPES. Universidades participantes do simpósio incluem West Virginia University, UFOPA, IESPES e talvez UEPA.

Nathan Darity and his wife, Valerie Hess, have returned to the United States after a month of volunteer activities in Santarém. Nathan is scheduled to coordinate a group of Amizade volunteers in Tanzania, Africa for the month of February and Valerie returns to her nursing job in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They expect to be back in Santarém for a few days in March to help coordinate the the HEH Symposium, which will take place at IESPES. Participating universities for the symposium include West Virginia University, UFOPA (Federal University of Western Pará) , IESPES (Esperança Institute of Higher Learning) and maybe UEPA (State University of Pará).

Quando o espaço de sala de aula acaba, saímos à procura de mais. Se necessário, vamos construir mais, ou criá-los para fora do que está na reserva para o currículo outras no futuro. Este foi o caso da nossa caçada na semana passada, quando Deliane dos Santos, diretor em exercício do IESPES (Instituto Esperança de Ensino Superior) fizesse um passeio detalhado da construção de laboratórios, que ainda está em construção. Dois dos quatro andares da estrutura são reservados para a Escola de Odontologia futuro, mas com alguns brasileiros "jeitos", algum do espaço pode ser utilizado de imediato para a carga extra de alunos ingressantes na instituição. Esse número está sendo executado em cerca de 2.000 agora. Estou anexando algumas imagens da turnê da semana passada.

When classroom space runs out, we go out looking for more. If necessary, we build more, or create them out of what's in reserve for other curriculum in the future. This was the case of our hunt last week, when Deliane dos Santos, acting director of IESPES (Esperança Institute for Higher Learning) took a detailed tour of the Laboratories Building, which is still under construction. Two of the four stories of the structure are reserved for the future Dental School, but with some Brazilian "jeitos", some of the space can be used right away for the extra load of students entering the institution. That figure is running at about 2,000 right now. I'm attaching some images from last week's tour.

Cerimônias de formatura para alunos de IESPES foram conduzidos no B. Tropical Hotel nas noites de 17 e 18 de janeiro. Sr. Ivair Chaves, vice-presidente do Conselho de Administração, representou Fundação Esperança na primeira noite (Escolas de Enfermagem, Farmácia e Psicologia) e eu fiz as honras da segunda noite (Escolas de Administração, Comunicação Social e Redes de Computadores). Mais de mil pessoas lotaram o auditório em ambas as ocasiões. Na noite de sexta-feira tivemos a honra de receber um convite de Valdiclea Oliveira (de enfermagem) para sua festa de formatura, que também ocorreu no mesmo hotel. Foi uma grande festa composta de membros da família e amigos íntimos. Obrigado por nos juntar ao importante evento.

Graduation ceremonies for IESPES (Esperança Institute of Higher Learning) students were conducted at the B. Tropical Hotel on the evenings of January 17 and 18. Sr. Ivair Chaves, vice-president of the Board of Directors, represented Fundação Esperança on the first evening (Schools of Pharmacy, Nursing and Psychology) and I did the honors the second night (Schools of Administration, Social Communication and Computer Networks). More than a thousand people packed the auditorium on both occasions. On Friday evening we were honored to receive an invitation from Valdiclea Oliveira (nursing) for her graduation party, which also took place at the same hotel. It was a great party made up of family members and close friends. Thanks for having us join the important event.

Dr. Clarissa é um dentista voluntário no Esperança Fundação até o final deste mês. Ela nasceu no Brasil, mas vive e trabalha no Estado de Virginia, nos Estados Unidos. Alessandra é um funcionário da TAM Airlines, um estudante de administração de IESPES e um voluntário de tradutor / intérprete de vez em quando com Amizade. Obrigado a ambos por sua participação em nossos programas.

I took the attached picture of Dr. Clarissa Bellard and Alessandra Lima at the farewell dinner for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania group earlier this week. Both beautiful ladies. Dr. Clarissa is a volunteer dentist at the Fundação Esperança until the end of this month. She was born in Brazil but lives and works in the State of Virginia in the United States. Alessandra is an employee of TAM Airlines, a student of administration at IESPES and a volunteer translator/interpreter from time to time with Amizade. Thank you both for your participation in our programs.

Os estudantes da Indiana University of Pennsylvania saiu cedo hoje de manhã depois de uma visita de dia 17 dias em Santarém. IUP foi uma das escolas visitadas pelos professores de IESPES, quando visitaram os Estados Unidos no ano passado.. Nathan Darity e sua esposa, Valerie Hess, coordenaram as duas intercâmbios . Fui convidado para o jantar de despedida para o grupo na Mania de Pizza a noite passada e IUP Professor Susan Boser me disse que a estadia em Santarém foi um sucesso total de todos os pontos de vista. Ela diz que há muitos programas de intercâmbio universitário na existência nos Estados Unidos, mas em sua opinião, Amizade é de longe o melhor. Ela promete que irá mandar mais grupos para Santarém no futuro. Habitação e refeições na Fundação Esperança foram pagos pelos próprios alunos. Dona Ana, funcionário da Fundação Esperança, e Dona Albanita foram responsáveis por alimentos e tarefas de habitação. Dena, do Pastoral do Menor, ajudou Nathan nos currículos de extra-atividades. Amizade volunteers from Indiana University of Pennsylvania left early this morning after a 17 day visit to Santarém. IUP was one of the schools visited by the IESPES professors when they visited the United States via an invitation from Amizade. Nathan Darity and his wife, Valerie Hess, coordinated both exchanges. I was invited to the farewell dinner for the group at Mania Pizza last night and IUP Professor Susan Boser told me that the Santarém stay was a total success from all standpoints. She says that there are many university exchange programs in existence in the United States but in her opinion, Amizade is by far the best. She promises that IUP will send more groups to Santarém in the future. Housing and meals at Fundação Esperança were paid for by the students themselves. Dona Ana, employee of Fundação Esperança, and Dona Albanita were responsible for food and housing chores. Dena from the Pastoral do Menor assisted Nathan in extra-curricula activities. As always, Micah Gregory was Nathan's right-hand man throughout the program. Alessandra, a student at IESPES, coordinated tours and cultural activities. Congratulations to everyone. Ficamos satisfeitos de ter Hildo Alegria, seu filho, Hildo Jr. e Jorge Garcia connosco durante os últimos meses. Todos são consultores da ANEND, uma Empresa da Auditoria Social e Serviços Contáveis em Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e Bahia. Estão terminando uma avaliação muito detalhada organizacional da Fundação Esperança para a Diretoria. Recomendações foram apresentadas em parte a semana passada.

We were pleased to have Hildo Alegria, his son, Hildo Jr. and Jorge Garcia with us for the last few months. They are consultants for ANEND, Social and Accounting Auditors from Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. Their charge is to conduct a very detailed organizational evaluation of Fundação Esperança for the Board of Directors. Recommendations, in part, were presented last week.

Hospital Riverboat Abaré

Agradeço Arno Sauer para o seu cartão de Natal do barco hospital Abaré. Arno continua sendo o gerente geral do navio. O barco pertence a Terra dos Homens, uma ONG da Holanda. Ela tem sido usada para os programas médicos e de saúde sobre os sistemas fluviais da Amazônia por parte dos governos municipals e também várias ONGs, incluindo Saúde e Alegria. Nós aqui na Fundação Esperança está olhando para as possibilidades de participar no programa a partir de 2013.

Thanks to Arno Sauer for his Christmas card of the hospital boat Abaré. Arno has been general manager of the vessel for several years. The boat belongs to Terra dos Homens, An NGO from Holland. It has been used for medical and health programs on the river systems of the Amazon by several municipality governments and also the NGO, Saúde e Alegria. We here at Fundação Esperança are looking at the possibilities of participating in program starting in 2013.

Empregados da Fundação Esperança foram dados folga Sexta-feira à tarde em preparação para as celebrações do fim do ano. Nós todos vamos voltar ao trabalho amanhã de manhã na programação regular. Aqueles de nós em Administração fizemos nosso almoço de férias e troca de presentes ao meio dia de sexta-feira. Elvana (Finanças) inventou um jogo dinâmico que chamei o "nó". Foi fácil de montar, mas o desfazer do nó exigiu uma série de manobras fantasia. Eu nunca vi um grupo de funcionários tão próximos um do outro! Em anexo estão algumas imagens do evento.

Fundação Esperança employees were given Friday afternoon off in preparation for the end of the year celebrations. We all return to work tomorrow morning on the regular schedule. Those of us in Administration held out holiday luncheon and exchange of presents at midday on Friday. Elvana (Finance) invented a dynamic game that I called the "knot". It was easy to put together but the undoing of the knot required a lot of fancy maneuvering. I have never seen a group of employees so close to one another! Attached are some images of the event.

Valerie, his wife, will arrive in Santarém with a group of Indiana University of Pennsylvania students on December 31st. The students and their professor will be here until January 18th. Nathan and Valerie stay on for another week.

Desde que o Dr. Bill está programado para ser em Santarém só em agosto, o prêmio foi recebido por ele pelo Dr. Mauro, um dos nossos dentistas aqui na Fundação Esperança.

Congratulations to Dr. Bill Chase for having received the Titulo de HONRA AO MÉRITO from the Santarém Camera de Vereadores (City Council). The indication for the award came from the Rotary Club de Santarém in tribute to the many years of volunteer service to the Fundação Esperança dental clinic, as a dentist and as a grantsman for the institution. Since Dr. Bill is scheduled to be in Santarém only in August, the award was received for him by Dr. Mauro, one of our dentists here at Fundação Esperança.

Férias de Natal estão chegando esta semana, a partir das 11:00 na sexta-feira, dia 23. Voltamos ao trabalho na segunda-feira dia 26. Felicidade é ter algum tempo livre com a família e amigos durante as férias. A felicidade também está recebendo uma cesta de mantimentos de Natal da instituição. Christmas holidays are coming up this week, starting at 11:00 on Friday, the 23rd. We return back to work on Monday the 26th. Happiness is having some free time with family and friends over the holidays. Happiness is also receiving a Christmas basket of goodies from the institution. Quando o tempo frio chega na América do Norte e Europa, muitos navios de cruzeiro fazem o seu caminho para a Amazônia. É o tempo "cool" do ano para nós também, mas é considerado quente por pessoas provenientes de neve e gelo. O tráfego de navios representa mais do que é considerado turismo para Santarém e da região, pelo menos para os turistas estrangeiros. Alunos de outras escolas e IESPES em Santarém aproveitar a época para praticar o Inglês e mostrar seus conhecimentos sobre a cultura local.

When cold weather sets in North America and Europe, many cruise ships make their way to the Amazon. It's the "cool" time of the year for us too, but it's considered hot by folks coming from snow and ice. Ship traffic represents most of what is considered tourism for Santarém and the region, at least for foreign tourists. Students at IESPES and other schools in Santarém take advantage of the season to practice English and show off their knowledge of the local culture.

O Edifício de Laboratórios foi originalmente concebido para a construção imediata de três andares. Nos últimos tempos, decidimos acrescentar o que acabará por ser o piso do quarto andar. Ele servirá como um teto, até que possamos concluir as paredes e o telhado permanente. Na semana passada acompanhei Padre Carlos a essa área para ter uma vista aérea de Santarém. The IESPES Laboratories Building was originally designed for the immediate construction of three floors. In recent times we decided to add what will eventually be the forth floor. It will serve as a roof until such time we can complete the walls and cover. This past week I accompanied Padre Carlos to that area to get an aerial view of Santarém. It's really quite impressive. Top image, Padre Carlos, Sr. Arnoldo and Sr. Paulo on top of the structure. That's the backside of IESPES behind them, a view not normally seen from the ground. Happy birthday to Dona Zizi! We joined her for the event on Friday evening but she didn't reveal her real age. Zizi was one of the first, if not the first, person to be hired by Frei Luke Tupper. That was in 1970, if I got it right. She is currently curator of the Esperança Museum of Science and Culture. She is a museum piece, herself.

Ficamos satisfeitos de ter Hildo Alegria e seu filho, Hildo Jr. conosco por alguns dias no mês passado. Ambos são consultores da ANEND, uma empresa de contabilidade em Porto Alegre. Juntamente com Jorge Garcia, estão terminando uma avaliação muito detalhada organizacional da Fundação Esperança para a Diretoria. O relatório final e recomendações serão apresentadas ao Conselho em janeiro. Jorge Garcia continua em Santarém até aquele momento.

We were pleased to have Hildo Alegria and his son, Hildo Jr. with us for a few days last month. They are both consultants from ANEND, an accounting firm in Porto Alegre. Together with Jorge Garcia, they are finishing up a very detailed organizational evaluation of Fundação Esperança for the Board of Directors. The final report and recommendations will be presented to the Board in January. Jorge Garcia continues in Santarém until that time.

A lot of activities at the Bill Chase Dental Clinic these days with Dr. Eric leaving and Dr. Henning arriving. We said hello and goodbye at the same time last Friday afternoon. O plebiscito como se deve ou não criar os Estados de Tapajós e Carajás está chegando em 11 de dezembro. Aqueles que votam em favor será que marca o número 77 na cédula de votação e aqueles contra, 55. Campanha é quente em ambos os lados. Obviamente, a maioria das pessoas nesta região vai votar 77. Um show em força na forma de uma carreata ocorreu na tarde de ontem com a imprensa nacional cobrindo o evento. Carreatas são comuns aqui, mas ninguém nunca tinha visto um tão grande e animado como este. Anexei algumas imagens dos veículos que saem da Fundação Esperança em seu caminho para se encontrar com os milhares de outros participantes na campanha.

The plebiscite as whether or not to create the States of of Tapajós and Carajás out of the State of Pará is coming up on December 11th. Those voting in favor will be marking the numbers 77 on the ballot and those against will be voting 55. Campaigning is hot on both sides. Obviously most the people in this region will be voting 77. A show in force in the form of a motorcade took place yesterday afternoon with the national press covering the event. Motorcades are common here, but nobody had ever seen one as large and animated as this one. I've attached some images of vehicles leaving the Fundação Esperança on their way to meet up with the thousands of others participating in the campaign.

The Health Education Promotion Team, made up of Fundação Esperança volunteers, conducts health services activities in the community on prescheduled occasions. This past Sunday they organized a cookout at APAE (Center for Exceptional Children) to raise funds for equipment and medical supplies needed for these special events. New classrooms under construction

Three new classrooms are under construction at the main campus of IESPES (Esperança Institute of Higher Learning). Given the concentration of buildings in that area, the responsible architect and engineer knew they were facing a jigsaw puzzle below the surface of the site. As seen in the attached images, they were not disappointed. I took these pictures a few days ago. I look forward in going back there to see what else might have been discovered.

Dada a concentração de edifícios nessa área, o arquiteto e engenheiro responsáveis sabiam que estavam diante de um quebra-cabeça abaixo da superfície do site. That's a big job, so it's not surprising that he will be here until the end of the year. CEPES - Great Wall of China

Construction of the "Great Wall of China" continues around the CEPES (Esperança Center for Professional Education) property. The size of the place is enormous, even with half of the land going to the Federal Institute of Pará. There are three impromptu soccer fields located there, all three of them in located in one corner of the lot, just to show you the size of the place. The school, which is large itself, can hardly be seen from that point.

Construção da "Grande Muralha da China" continua em redor do CEPES (Centro Esperança de Educação Profissional) da propriedade. O tamanho do local é enorme, mesmo com metade da terra indo para o Instituto Federal do Pará. Existem três campos de futebol improvisados ali localizados, todos os três deles estão localizado em uma esquina do lote, apenas para lhe mostrar o tamanho do lugar. A escola, que é grande em si, dificilmente pode ser visto a partir desse ponto.

It's an annual event that we look forward to with a great deal of anticipation, speaking of Amazônia Laboratório's campaign in promoting prevention of breast cancer. This morning was culmination of the event with a breakfast at the B. Tropical Hotel for doctors and their families. Telmo and Nadia, owners of the laboratory, are excellent educators and in this instance, great hosts for the get together of professionals.

Galdino Flavio de Almeida (second person left to right) has left the Fundação Esperança Board of Directors because of his upcoming move to from Santarém to São Paulo. Elected substitute for Flavio as Board Secretary is Renato Dantas (fourth person, left to right). Flavio has served on the Board of Directors since it was formed in 1978. We thank him for his generous support and dedication over the years and we wish him and his family all the best in São Paulo.

Also elected to the Fundação Esperança Board of Directors is Raimundo Agenor Galúcio, first person on the left side of the image. We thank him and Renato Dantas for being with us.

Flavio Galdino de Almeida (segunda pessoa da esquerda para a direita) deixou a Diretoria da Fundação Esperança por causa de sua mudança de Santarém para São Paulo. Substituto eleito para Conselho no lugar de Flavio é Renato Dantas (quarta pessoa, da esquerda para a direita). Flavio tem servido na Diretoria desde que foi formado em 1978. Congratulations to all professors on their day, especially professors at IESPES, our Esperança Institute of Higher Learning. I didn't have to look very far to find the images I needed for this post because I had attended a meeting of coordinators this week in which Dr. Iara Xavier from the Ministry of Education in Brasília unraveled the bureaucracy of how MEC evaluates schools of higher learning in this country. That's Dr. Iara in the top image. In the bottom image, professors/coordinators of the many courses offered at IESPES. They are responsible for approximately 80 professors and 2,000 students. Congratulations to all of you.

Fatima Maia

It was so good seeing Fatima Maia here at Fundação Esperança this week. She has returned to Santarém after more than two years in São Paulo, where she received treatment for breast cancer. She is a survivor! Fatima was one of the first health aides to be trained by Fundação Esperança back in 1979, representing the community of Cipoal on the Planalto. Although the Santarém-Cuiabá Highway was not paved at that time, she took a bus to Santarém every night to complete her high-school education, followed by a nursing degree. Welcome back Fatima!

Foi tão bom ver Fátima Maia aqui na Fundação Esperança esta semana. Ela voltou para Santarém, após mais de dois anos em São Paulo, onde recebeu tratamento para câncer de mama. Ela é uma sobrevivente! Fátima foi um dos primeiras atendentes de saúde a ser treinado pela Fundação Esperança em 1979, representando a comunidade de Cipoal no Planalto. Apesar da Rodovia Santarém-Cuiabá não foi pavimentada na época, ela pegou um ônibus para Santarém todas as noites para completar a sua educação de ensino médio, seguido de um grau de enfermagem. Bem-vindo de volta Fátima!

Field trip to Santana do Ituqui

Fundação Esperança conducted a day of health services at Santana do Ituqui on September 21th. Santana is located about two hours drive east of Santarém on the floodplain of the Amazon River. Being able to get there by vehicle reduces the logistics and expense compared to a riverboat. The Fundação Esperança team of 15 people consisted of nurses, laboratory technicians, students from IESPES and CEPES and members of the Dentinho project, specialized in dental education. The inauguration of the first floor is scheduled for late this afternoon. In the lower image, note the facade that cover up the continuing construction of the building. Two additional floors are confirmed for construction in this phase and a fourth floor later on. That's Lucinilda (Purchases/Stockroom) on the left and Alexandra (Payments Due) on the right. IESPES Laboratories to be inaugurated today

It was great to hear from Padre Carlos this morning and learn that the first floor of the new IESPES Laboratories Building will be inaugurated today. I'm sorry to miss the important event but I'm in Belém finishing up some vacation, as well as medical exams. I expect to be back in Santarém by next week. Having followed the construction from Day 1, starting in January of this year, I look forward to seeing students and professors in the laboratories. And I can look forward to other inaugurations because the building is projected to be four stories high! Student population has exploded at IESPES, requiring some fast footwork to keep up with classroom and laboratory space.

Foi muito bom receber uma ligação de Padre Carlos nesta manhã e saber que o primeiro andar do novo edifício de laboratórios para IESPES será inaugurada hoje. Lamento perder o evento importante, mas eu estou em Belém terminando umas férias, bem como os exames médicos. Espero estar de volta a Santarém na próxima semana. Tendo seguido a construção a partir do dia 1, a partir de janeiro deste ano, estou ansioso para ver os estudantes e professores nos laboratórios. E eu posso olhar para a frente a outras inaugurações porque o edifício está projetado para ser de quatro andares de altura! The Fundação Esperança Commission for the Prevention of Accidents conducted an educational bliz on the street in front of IESPES a few days ago. The theme of the action was that of prevention of venereal diseases via the use of condoms. Dr. Andrea (back row, holding the box of educational material) is the president of the commission this year.

This past Monday, the Fundação Esperança Board of Directors had the pleasure of receiving four of the five professors returning from an exchange program at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown. The stop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania included a visit to Amizade Ltd., which was hosted by Nathan Darity. Reporting on their two week trip to the United States were Dra. Irene Escher and Verena Maia (top image); Robert Branco (second image from top); Alexandre Escher (third image from top); and Claudia Sadala (last image). Congratulations to all for a successful interchange with the University of West Virginia. We look forward to having the West Virginia professors in Santarém this coming year.

I apologize to readers for not posting more news about the Fundação Esperança this month. Although I'm taking vacation the month of September, I'm also doing some medical examinations here in Belém. If all goes well, I'll be back in Santarém on October 1 and back to work on the 3rd. In the meanwhile, I'll try to add a few post from my instock images.

The attached image was taken last week. The beginning construction of a brick wall which will fence in part of the CEPES (Esperança Institute of Professional Education) property. The school is in the background. As you can see, the property is gigantic, the reason I call it the Great Wall of China.

Peço desculpas aos leitores por não postar mais notícias sobre a Fundação Esperança neste mês. Embora eu estou tomando as férias do mês de setembro, eu também estou fazendo alguns exames médicos aqui em Belém. Se tudo correr bem, estarei de volta em Santarém em 01 de outubro e volta ao trabalho no dia 3. Nesse meio tempo, vou tentar adicionar um post algumas das imagens minha instock.

CEPES- new images

The pedestrian entrance to CEPES (Esperança Institute of Professional Education) was closed for some time because the ramp (stairs) from the Turiano Meira Street to the school walkway had been bulldozed down on the last attempt to pave the street. Fundação Esperança recently rebuilt the structure and I must say that it looks much better than the older one. More functional too. The school got a new paint job and the name is much easier to read. The chap in the images is head of maintenance for CEPES.

A entrada de pedestres para CEPES (Esperança Instituto de Educação Profissional) foi fechado por algum tempo, porque a rampa de acesso (escadas) da Turiano Meira Street para a passagem da escola foi demolida na última tentativa para pavimentar a rua. Fundação Esperança terminou de reconstuir a nova rampa e parece muito melhor do que a velha. Mais funcional também. A escola ganhou uma nova pintura e o nome é muito mais fácil de ler.

New Reception area nearly ready

Plans do change … that being the case of what was going to be a centralized finance department in the newly constructed area next to reception. According to the most recent plans, it will soon become a new reception area for incoming patients, plus a secure office for receiving fees. Some minor changes are yet to be concluded on an inner wall to make this possible. The man behind details like these is Sr. Guilhereme, head of our maintenance department.

De acordo com os planos mais recentes, em breve se tornará recepção para os pacientes de entrada, além de uma área segura para receber taxas. Paulo Campos Corrêa, 1933-2011

Santarenos are saddened by the death of Paulo Campos Corrêa. He died in Belém yesterday at the age of 78. Here at Fundação Esperança we pay tribute to the man for the contributions made to the success of Fundação Esperança over the years. As noted in the attached image, he served on the first General Assembly, which met for the first time on 05 April 1978. The invitation to the inauguration of Fundação Esperança was loaned to me by Dona Zizi, the alias Maria França de Oliveira. The attached image of Paulo was cropped from a historical photograph published on this blog earlier in the week. Our condolences to the family.

Santarenos estão tristes com a morte de Paulo Campos Corrêa. Ele morreu em Belém ontem com a idade de 78. Aqui na Fundação Esperança pagamos tributo ao homem para as contribuições feitas para o sucesso da Fundação Esperança ao longo dos anos. Como observado na imagem em anexo, ele serviu na primeira Assembléia Geral, que se reuniu pela primeira vez em 05 de abril de 1978. O convite para a inauguração da Fundação Esperança foi emprestado a mim por Dona Zizi, o alias Maria França de Oliveira. A four-story classroom structure calls for several bathrooms, which means a gigantic underground septic tank, if that's the right nomenclature. Bottom image, the hole being made ready for two compartments, the holding tank for solids and the drainage area for liquids. Middle image, completed. Top image, one of the bathrooms located on the first floor. It will be ready for use by the end of September.

I've second-guessed the inauguration date of the USAID/ASHA buildings at Fundação Esperança on several occasions, not finding it in bits and pieces of history annotations on my computer. Such was the case of the prior post on the retirement of Christine Serrão. A few minutes ago I remembered a sign on the outer wall of the FE Laboratory. Could it be? Yes, there is the date I have been trying to find. It's 22 November 1980. In the image, me with Lee Stoner, former director of USAID/Brazil and associate, Cristina. The picture was taken in May of last year.

Eu estava na duvida sobre a data da inauguração dos prédios USAID / ASHA da Fundação Esperança. Tal foi o caso do post anterior sobre a aposentadoria de Christine Serrão. The U.S. Embassy in Brasília has announced the retirement of the Consular Agent in Belém, Christine Serrao, from the U.S. government, effective 01 September. We have known Christine since 1979, about one year after she was appointed Consular Agent. Over the years she has visited Fundação Esperança several times, once representing the U.S. Ambassador at the inauguration of the complex of buildings financed by the American government.

IESPES delegation in the US

I'm pleased to report that Dr. Irene Escher and her Santarém delegation have arrived in the United States to complete a two week itinerary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the University of West Virginia at Morgantown. Nathan Darity and his wife Valerie of Amizade Ltd. are hosts in Pittsburgh for the first part of the program. The last week will be spent at the University of West Virginia with Dr. Mike Lastinger (Associate Provost for International Academic Affairs) and Dr. George Lies (Grants Administrator for the Office of International Programs). Both professors were hosted by the Fundação Esperança in Santarém in May of last year. The exchange delegation is made up of five IESPES professors and one from UFOPA (The Federal University of Western Pará). Members include Irene Escher, Roberto Branco Filho, Alexandre Escher, Klaudia Sadala, Verena Maia and Katrine Escher. We look forward to hearing more about their trip.

Power outages seem to be more frequent these days, which means non-operational moments (sometimes hours) throughout most of our organization. Everyone moves out to open areas for light and ventilation. The perfect time for socializing with colleagues normally tied up with patients. Such was the case Wednesday afternoon, when I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Mauro, a part-time dental surgeon at our Bill Chase Dental Clinic. I've known him for quite a few years as a private dentist and employee of the State and Municipality governments, but I can't say I've ever had a chance to really sit down and talk with him. A pleasure, indeed.

Quedas de energia parecem ser mais freqüentes estes dias de hoje, o que significa momentos não-operacionais (as vezes horas) na maior parte da nossa organização. Todo mundo sai para áreas abertas para a luz e ventilação. O momento perfeito para socializar com os colegas, normalmente amarrados com os pacientes. Tal foi o caso quarta-feira à tarde, quando eu tive o prazer de falar com o Dr. Mauro, um cirurgião a tempo parcial dental na nossa Clínica Dentária Bill Chase. Eu o conheço há alguns anos como um dentista particular e funcionário dos governos do Estado e Município, mas não posso dizer que eu já tive a oportunidade de realmente sentar e conversar com ele. Um prazer, na verdade.

Welcome to Francis Probst, who is now working with us in the grants department at Fundação Esperança. "Francisco" taught Science of Religions and English at IESPES (Esperança Institute of Higher Learning) prior to joining our office.

The plan is to have the first floor of the new laboratory building ready for classes by the end of this month. Great strides have been taken in that direction but what remains seems to be monumental. Images taken earlier this week before I traveled to Belém.

O plano é ter o primeiro andar do prédio novo laboratório pronto para as aulas até o final deste mês. Grandes avanços têm sido tomadas nesse sentido, mas o que resta parece ser monumental. Imagens tiradas no início desta semana antes de eu viajou para Belém.

Sealer has been applied to the brick and mortar walls of the new section of Reception. It's a question of days before the it's ready for use. A fine addition to both Finance and Reception.

Tinta selador está sendo aplicado às paredes de tijolos e argamassa da nova seção de Recepção. É uma questão de dias antes do que está pronto para uso. Uma adição muito bonita para ambas os setores de Finança e Recepção.

Maria José retires

All of us turned out for a farewell luncheon for Maria José, who retired from the Fundação Esperança maintenance department after many years of dedicated services. It seems to me that she is young enough to enjoy good health and happiness for some time to come. Todo mundo chegou para um almoço de despedida para Maria José, quem se aposentou da Esperança Fundação, setor de manutenção depois de muitos anos de serviço dedicado. Parece-me que ela é jovem o suficiente para gozar de boa saúde e felicidade por algum tempo para vir. Congratulations to Ethel Soares and her team at the Council on Aging for an outstanding conference that took place this past Friday at the IESPES auditorium. Ethel is presiding officer for the council and also represents Fundação Esperança on it and several other councils.
